Swimming Surges at Sectionals; Ends Season

On February 8 and 9, the Big Blue Swim Team competed in the Southwest Ohio Sectional Championships at St. Xavier High School. Friday night, the boys team showed up to compete and started the team out on a good foot. The boys Medley Relay (Nicholas Cafarelli – backstroke, Tanner Hamblin – breaststroke, Owen Bullard – butterfly, Seth Vauter – freestyle) started the team out strong with a 2 second drop and a new time of 2:04.58. Tanner Hamblin had best times in the 100 Freestyle (59.65) and the 100 Breaststroke (1:22.82). Seth Vauter swam a personal best in the 100 Freestyle (1:07.53). The boys 200 Freestyle relay (Tanner Hamblin, Seth Vauter, Nicholas Cafarelli, Owen Bullard) swam a new time of 1:47.23. Finally, Nicholas Cafarelli stunned in the 100 Backstroke finishing 16th and a new best time of 1:05.48.
On Saturday, the girls were ready to show up for Hamilton by starting out the meet with new times in the 200 Freestyle by Meghan Garry (2:47.32), Olivia Lowry (2:55.05) and Senior Hannah Venerable (2:45.34). Lindsey Flenner swam a best time in the 200 IM (2:46.62) and Nikki Contreras beat her 100 Breaststroke time (1:53.66). Freshman Ellie Gibbons swam a best time in the 100 Freestyle (1:05.48) and 100 Backstroke (1:18.42). The Girls 400 Freestyle Relay (Lindsey Flenner, Aryonna Blue, Ellie Gibbons, Olivia Bender) dropped a combined 3 seconds for a new time of 4:37.27. The highlight of the meet was Senior Olivia Bender breaking 6:00 in the 500 freestyle for a new time of 5:58.93, it was a great way to send Olivia off in her final high school meet!
Altogether, the boys team placed 6th overall, beating out Winton Woods, Harrison, Northwest, and Colerain. The girls team finished 9th beating out Northwest and Harrison.
