The Big Blue boy’s basketball team was handed a 57-45 loss on Senior Night by the Vikings Friday Night. Hamilton falls to 11-11 on the season and 8-8 in the Greater Miami Conference.
Before play began, referee Randy McMahan was honored for his service as an official. Senior basketball players and cheerleaders were honored as well for their contribution to the Big Blue community.
Hamilton outshot Princeton by 20.2% in the first half as both teams battle for the lead. However, Princetown was able to close out on top, 12-8, at the end of the first quarter. Hamilton gained momentum in the second quarter but Princeton continued to connect, maintaining the lead. With 2 seconds left in the first half, sophomore guard D’Marco Howard sunk a three pointer cutting the Vikings’ lead by two, 20-22.
Hamilton kept up with Princeton in the third quarter, but was unable make shots, going 10-25 in the field. Head coach Sean Van Winkle said: “The second half we missed some shots early. [They] forced us to play man defense…and…that’s why they kind of got away from us.” Princeton closed out the quarter with a 11-1 run, bringing the score to 40-27.
Princeton was able to maintain ahead in the fourth quarter, extending their lead by 16 points with less than 5 minutes remaining in the game. Senior forward Myles Howard was able to make baskets and draw fouls, however, he was unable to connect on free throws. Despite the effort, Hamilton was ultimately defeated 57-45.
Howard led the Big Blue in scoring, finishing with 12 points, 2 assists, 7 rebounds. Senior forward Hunter Hamilton had 4 points, 2 assists and 5 rebounds.
Hamilton now turns its focus on the tournament. The team travels to Lakota West on Feb. 24 at 6:00 p.m. to face Elder.
