Big Blue falls short against the Firebirds

Despite their efforts, the Hamilton boy’s basketball team fell to Lakota West 44-43 Friday night.

Rebounding and missed shots were the downfall of the Big Blue. West hit 8 of 18 from the field in the second half and out rebounded Hamilton 31-22.

Head coach Sean Van Winkle said: “They did a really good job defensively against us, holding us not only low point wise but a very bad shooting percentage. We just had a tough time executing against them. The rebounding hurt us [badly] and being able to score against their zone was really tough.”

The Firebirds were able to pull away in the fourth quarter with a 10-4 run. The Big Blue fought back to keep the score within one. A foul called against senior forward D’Marco Howard put senior guard Frank Schmitt on the line for the Firebirds. After sinking both free throws, Hamilton had less than 3 seconds to hit a game winning three pointer, but was unable to do so.

Hamilton was lead by senior forward D’Marco Howard who finished with 14 points. He said, “It’s a tough loss. I’m going to take this loss for myself. I shouldn’t have fouled that guy at the end. I should have kept playing defense but at the same time I didn’t mean to [foul him].”

The Big Blue fall to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the Greater Miami Conference. They face Mount Health Friday Dec. 23 at 7:30 p.m.
